The site
Tyre is an ancient Phoenician city on the Lebanese coast of the Mediterranean, occupied across an extraordinary span from about 2750 BCE into the 13th century CE. Long one of the foremost harbors of the Phoenician-Punic world, it fused maritime trade with deep-rooted urban life. Few cities on this shore claim so unbroken a stretch of occupation, nearly four thousand years of Mediterranean history layered on a single site.
