The site

Gadara is an ancient Hellenistic city in what is now Jordan, founded around 300 BCE and later a member of the Decapolis league. Its ruins lie at Umm Qais, perched on a hill 378 metres above sea level, commanding a sweeping view over the Yarmouk River gorge toward the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. Occupied by Greeks and Romans until 749 CE, it now holds a place on UNESCO's tentative list.
