The site

Bosra is an ancient city in southern Syria, first a key Nabataean center and later the prosperous capital of the Roman province of Arabia Petraea. Occupied from around 100 BCE into the early Islamic centuries, it guarded Syria's southern gateway and flourished as a Christian archbishopric and hub of learning. Its black basalt streets and monuments earned Bosra a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
