The site
Empúries was an ancient Greek city on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia, Spain, founded in 575 BCE by Greeks from Phocaea. Its name, Emporion, means trading place, and it thrived as a commercial hub before Hannibal's invasion of Gaul prompted the Romans to occupy it in 218 BCE, beginning their conquest of Hispania. Left exposed to coastal raiders, the city was abandoned in the early Middle Ages.
