The site
The Amphitheater of Nîmes is a Roman arena in southern France, built around the end of the 1st century CE. Its tiered oval of stone seating was raised to hold some 24,000 onlookers for the spectacles of the Roman world. One of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere, it still stages bullfights and concerts beneath the same double tier of arcades that once framed gladiatorial games, standing today as one of the enduring monuments of Roman Gaul.
