The site

The Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct bridge in southern France, raised in the first century AD to carry water across the river Gardon on its 50-kilometre journey to the colony of Nemausus, modern Nîmes. Among the best-preserved aqueduct bridges the Romans ever built, its tiered arches still vault the gorge in near-perfect condition. That exceptional survival, historical weight, and sheer engineering nerve earned it a place on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1985.
