The site
Glanum is an ancient city in southern France that began as a Celto-Ligurian hilltown, expanded under Greek influence, and matured into a Roman city, occupied from about 600 BCE to 260 CE. Set below a gorge on the flanks of the Alpilles, it was never overbuilt and lay partly buried by hillside deposits, which preserved it remarkably well. It is famous above all for two first-century BC monuments known as Les Antiques: a mausoleum and a triumphal arch.
