The site
Vindolanda is a Roman auxiliary fort in Northumberland, England, built around 85 CE just south of and predating Hadrian's Wall, guarding the Stanegate road across northern Britain. It is famed above all for the Vindolanda tablets — thin wooden leaf-tablets carrying handwritten letters and lists that, when found, were the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. These fragile scraps of ink give rare, direct voice to soldiers and their families on the frontier.
