The site

Rano Raraku is a volcanic tuff crater on the slopes of Terevaka, in Easter Island's Rapa Nui National Park, Chile. For roughly 500 years it served as the quarry that supplied the stone for about 95 percent of the island's known moai. Some 887 of these monolithic statues still remain here, making the crater a living record of moai design and carving technique.
