The site

Caral, in the Supe Valley of Peru, is the principal city of the Caral-Supe civilization and reckoned the oldest city in the Americas. Occupied around 2600 to 2000 BCE, it rose some 1,500 years before Mesoamerica's first complex societies. Its cluster of monumental platform pyramids and sunken plazas shows a diversity of ceremonial and administrative buildings without parallel so early in the New World, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
