The site

Orongo is a stone village and ceremonial centre perched at the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), built by the Rapa Nui people. Its low, sod-covered, windowless houses cling to the rim of the Rano Kau caldera, where a 300-metre cliff plunges to the ocean on one side and a steep slope drops to a freshwater marsh on the other. UNESCO-backed excavations restored its 53 masonry houses from 1974, and it now forms part of Rapa Nui National Park.
