The site

Maiden Castle is a Celtic hillfort in southern England, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Established around 600 BCE and occupied into the Roman period, it is defined by immense multiple ramparts and ditches ringing the hilltop, enclosing an area of some fifty football pitches. Excavations here uncovered a war cemetery from the Roman assault that finally took the fort — earthworks that stand as a monument to the ambition and organisation of Iron Age Britain.
