The site

L'Anse aux Meadows, on the northern tip of Newfoundland, is the remains of a Norse settlement dating to about 1000 CE. It is the only undisputed site of pre-Columbian European contact with the Americas outside Greenland, with carbon and tree-ring dates near 1021. Excavators uncovered eight sod-over-timber buildings and more than 800 Norse objects, including evidence of iron production, marking it as a base camp for Viking exploration. It is a World Heritage Site.
