The site

Cahokia is the site of a Native American city built by the Mississippian culture across the river from present-day St. Louis, thriving between roughly 700 and 1350 CE. At its peak around 1100 it sprawled over six square miles with some 120 earthworks and a population of fifteen to twenty thousand, making it the largest and most influential Mississippian settlement. This UNESCO World Heritage site remains the largest, most complex archaeological site north of pre-Columbian Mexico.
