The site

Nineveh was an ancient city of Upper Mesopotamia on the eastern bank of the Tigris, at what is now Mosul in northern Iraq, and served as capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. For roughly fifty years it stood as the largest and perhaps wealthiest city in the world, until a coalition of Babylonians, Medes and Scythians sacked it in 612 BCE. Its two great tells, Kuyunjiq and Nabi Yunus, still rise within the walls.
