The site

Assur, also called Ashur, was the capital of the Middle Assyrian Empire and a religious heart of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, rising on the western bank of the Tigris in what is now Iraq. Occupation ran for roughly 3,000 years, from the Early Dynastic Period until the city was sacked by the Sasanians in the mid-3rd century CE. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was placed on the list of sites in danger in 2003 over a proposed dam that would flood part of it.
