The site

Nimrud, known to the Assyrians as Kalhu and to the Bible as Calah, is an ancient Assyrian city on the Tigris in northern Iraq, some 30 km south of Mosul. A major centre between roughly 1350 and 610 BCE, it sprawled across 360 hectares and by 800 BCE held around 75,000 people, making it the most populous city in the world of its day. Its ruins have been excavated since 1845.
