The site
Hatra is an ancient fortified caravan city in Upper Mesopotamia, in northern Iraq, and the capital of a small kingdom occupied from about 300 BCE to 241 CE. Wedged between the Roman and Parthian empires, it is considered the richest known archaeological site of the Parthian world. Hatra flourished in the 2nd century before the Sasanians destroyed it in the 3rd, leaving ruins that lay unrecorded until their rediscovery in the 19th century.
