The site
Naqsh-e Rustam is an ancient necropolis carved into a cliff face in Fars province, Iran, about 13 km from Persepolis. Four great tombs cut high into the rock hold Achaemenid kings, among them Darius the Great and his son Xerxes, their facades showing the king invested by a god above rows of tribute-bearers. Reliefs added by later Sasanian rulers extend the site's record across more than a thousand years.
