The site

Bishapur is an ancient city in Iran and one of the capitals of the Sasanian Empire, founded in the third century CE by order of Shapur I to mark a Sasanian victory over Rome. Sprawling across about 200 hectares, it is one of the few Iranian cities laid out on Greek urban planning principles. A World Heritage Site, it once rivaled great eastern Roman cities like Antioch before declining after the Muslim conquest.
