The site
Mari is an ancient city on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, founded around 2900 BCE and inhabited through the Sumerian and Akkadian ages until its fall in 1759 BCE. For over a millennium it stood as a major Mesopotamian centre linking the great powers of the river valley. Now on Syria's tentative World Heritage list, Mari preserves the record of a long-lived Bronze Age metropolis.
