The site

Palmyra rises from the central Syrian desert, an ancient caravan city that grew rich funneling Silk Road trade before falling under Roman rule in the first century CE. Its wealth built monumental works: the Great Colonnade, the Temple of Bel, and distinctive tower tombs in its necropolis. The Palmyrenes blended Amorite, Aramean, and Arab roots, speaking Aramaic while conducting business in Greek.
