The site

Ebla was one of the earliest kingdoms in Syria, a city whose remains form a tell about 55 kilometres southwest of Aleppo. Beginning as a small settlement around 3500 BCE, it grew into a trading empire that dominated much of northern and eastern Syria before its destruction in the 23rd century BCE. Its discovery proved the Levant was a center of ancient centralized civilization equal to Egypt and Mesopotamia.
