The site
Kourion was an important ancient Greek city-state on the southwestern coast of Cyprus, settled by Greeks from Argos after the collapse of the Mycenaean palaces. Its acropolis crowns a limestone promontory nearly 100 metres high above Episkopi Bay. Battered by five heavy earthquakes in the fourth century, the city was largely rebuilt, and its remains now lie within the British territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
