The site
Hallstatt is a small Austrian town wedged between a lake and the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif, prized for salt mining that reaches back into prehistoric times. Its Bronze Age and Celtic workings, active from around 1500 to 350 BCE, gave their name to the Hallstatt culture of the Early Iron Age. Today the mine and its ancient necropolis sit within a UNESCO cultural landscape.
