The site
The Hochdorf Chieftain's Grave is a lavishly furnished Celtic burial chamber near Eberdingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, dating to the Hallstatt period. Rediscovered in 1968 beneath a mound long flattened by erosion and ploughing, it held a man of about fifty laid out on an eight-wheeled bronze recliner. A gold-plated torc, an amber-jewelled dagger and a birch-bark hat mark him unmistakably as a chieftain, offering a rare glimpse of Celtic elite splendour.
