The site
Augusta Treverorum, the Roman city from which modern Trier grew, was founded on the Moselle River under Augustus, between the first Roman bridge of 18/17 BCE and the emperor's death in 14 CE. In late antiquity it became one of the western imperial residences, home to rulers including Constantine the Great, who sponsored monuments such as the Imperial Baths and the Basilica of Constantine. By 300 CE it was the largest city north of the Alps, and its Roman buildings are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
