The site
Aquileia is a Roman city at the head of the Adriatic in northeastern Italy, founded as a military colony in 181 BCE and grown to nearly 100,000 people by the 2nd century CE. Capital of the Augustan tenth region and an early Christian metropolis, it was the first city on the Italian peninsula sacked by Attila the Hun. Today its mosaics and early Christian basilica rank it among northern Italy's most significant archaeological sites.
