The site

Diocletian's Palace is a colossal Roman palace-fortress raised on a Croatian peninsula at the end of the third century AD as the retirement residence of Emperor Diocletian. Half the walled complex was his private quarters, the rest a military garrison guarding it. Astonishingly, the fortress never emptied out: today its stone streets form roughly half of Split's old town, threaded with 3,000 residents, shops, and cafes, and listed by UNESCO in 1979.
