The site

Carnuntum began as a Roman legionary fortress on the Danube and headquarters of the Pannonian fleet, later becoming capital of the province of Pannonia Superior. At its height it was a city of some 50,000 inhabitants, complete with an amphitheatre. Its impressive remains spread across an archaeological park in Lower Austria, roughly halfway between Vienna and Bratislava.
