The site

Vat Phou is a ruined Khmer-Hindu temple complex in southern Laos, built up over centuries and occupied from about 500 to 1300 CE. The site centers on a sanctuary at a natural spring, an offering place with roots reaching into prehistoric times. Its earliest megalithic stone structures, perhaps as old as the second century BCE, included stone cells, a crocodile carving, serpent stairs, and offering platforms, and a 7th-century brick building became the focus of later construction. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
