The site

The Villa Romana del Casale is a large and elaborate Roman villa or palace near Piazza Armerina in Sicily, dating to the early 4th century CE. Its glory is its floors: mosaic and opus sectile pavements covering some 3,500 square meters, called the richest and most varied Roman collection to survive. A landslide and floods buried and so preserved them, and frescoes once covered even the exterior walls. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it draws over 350,000 visitors a year.
