The site
Selinunte was a wealthy Greek city of Magna Graecia, founded around 628 BCE on the south-western coast of Sicily between the Cottone and Modione rivers. Its ruins are dominated by a cluster of monumental temples, five of them centered on an acropolis, with the earliest raised around 550 BCE. At its height the city may have held some 30,000 people before it was destroyed in 250 BCE and never reoccupied.
