The site
Takalik Abaj is a pre-Columbian archaeological site on Guatemala's Pacific coastal plain, and one of the rare places bearing both Olmec and Maya features. It holds one of the greatest concentrations of Olmec-style sculpture outside the Gulf of Mexico, alongside a Maya royal tomb and some of the earliest Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions. Occupied from around 800 BCE to 900 CE, this trading center became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
