The site

The Nok culture is named for a village in southern Kaduna State, Nigeria, where its remarkable terracotta sculptures were first unearthed in 1928. Emerging perhaps around 1500 BCE and lasting until roughly 1 BCE, the Nok produced fired-clay figures on a large scale, apparently tied to a complex funerary tradition that may have involved feasting. Some sculptures depict figures wielding bows, arrows and slingshots, hints of hunting and daily life.
