The site

Ile-Ife is a Yoruba city in Nigeria, a centre of the Ife-Benin cultural world occupied between about 1100 and 1500 CE. Regarded in Yoruba tradition as a founding city, it is renowned in archaeology for the naturalistic brass and terracotta heads produced by its artisans, works whose lifelike modelling stands among the great achievements of West African art.
