The site

Mayapan is a walled Maya city in Yucatan, Mexico, and the political and cultural capital of the Post-Classic Maya from the 1220s until the 1440s. Behind its defensive walls stand more than 4,000 structures, once home to an estimated 15,000 to 17,000 people. Surveyed and excavated since 1939, it remains under active study by a joint Mexican-United States team.
