The site

Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite Empire in the late Bronze Age, its ruins lying within a great loop of the Kızılırmak River near modern Boğazkale, Turkey. This fortified city of temples and massive walls flourished across the centuries between roughly 2000 and 1200 BCE. Brought to notice by a French archaeologist in 1834, it has been systematically excavated since the early 20th century and joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1986.
