The site

Gordion, near modern Yassıhüyük in Turkey, was the capital of ancient Phrygia, occupied from around 1200 to 300 BCE and sited where the road between Lydia and Assyria crossed the Sangarius river. Its citadel mound and long tradition of burial tumuli make it the type site of Phrygian civilization. A well-preserved destruction level of about 800 BCE serves archaeologists as a chronological linchpin for the whole region.
