The site

Hierapolis was a Hellenistic Greek city in Phrygia, in southwestern Anatolia, founded in the 3rd century BC on a Phrygian cult centre of the mother goddess Cybele and occupied into the 14th century. Renowned for its hot springs, fine wool, and dyes, it drew spa-goers who often retired or died there, filling its vast necropolis with tombs. Adjacent to modern Pamukkale, this World Heritage Site was also the birthplace of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus.
