The site

Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeastern Arizona shelters one of North America's longest continuously inhabited landscapes, occupied from around 2500 BCE to 1300 CE by the Ancestral Puebloans and later the Navajo. Its three great canyons, cut by streams from the Chuska Mountains, preserve cliff dwellings and rock art. Remarkably, none of its 83,840 acres is federally owned, and it remains one of the most visited monuments in the United States.
