The site
The Wari archaeological complex in Peru was the heartland city of the Wari, whose state flourished between roughly 500 and 1000 CE. Sprawling across the Andean highlands, it ranks among the great pre-Columbian urban centers of South America. For the explorer it marks the seat of a powerful Andean polity that rose long before the Inca, its dense ruins spread across the terrain of the central sierra.
