The site
Vergina is a small town in northern Greece that sits atop ancient Aigai, the first capital of Macedon and an occupied place from around 1000 BCE. In 1977 researchers uncovered three royal tombs here; two were found intact and heavy with burial goods, one thought to hold Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The site also held an extensive royal palace, and its finds fill one of Greece's most important museums.
