The site
Dodona, in the mountains of Epirus in northwestern Greece, was the oldest Hellenic oracle, possibly reaching back into the second millennium BCE. Homer describes it as an oracle of Zeus, and despite its remote setting far from the main Greek poleis it was considered second only to Delphi in prestige. Passing from Thesprotian to Molossian control, this sanctuary and temple site remained an important religious center until the rise of Christianity in the Late Roman era.
