The site

Butrint is an ancient Greek polis, later a Roman city and early Christian bishopric, set on a hill above the Vivari Channel in southern Albania. Founded by the Chaonians, it passed through Epirote, Roman, and Byzantine hands across some two thousand years before an earthquake flooded the city and it was abandoned in the Middle Ages. One of the most important archaeological sites in Albania, Butrint was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
