The site

Taxila, historically Takshashila, is one of the oldest cities in South Asia, on the Pothohar Plateau of northern Punjab in Pakistan and occupied from around 600 BCE into the fifth century CE. Sitting at the junction of the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia near the Indus River, it was for a time the capital of the kingdom of Gandhara and passed under Achaemenid and then Alexander's control. Its layered ruins are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
