The site
Sukhothai Historical Park preserves the ruins of the Siamese city whose name means 'dawn of happiness,' capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom across the 13th and 14th centuries in north-central Thailand. A rectangular wall about two kilometres across, gated at each side, encloses the royal palace and twenty-six temples, the grandest being Wat Mahathat. Some 193 ruins are scattered over the surrounding land, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
