The site

The Plain of Jars is a megalithic landscape in Laos, scattered across the upland valleys of the Xiangkhoang Plateau. Thousands of carved stone jars stand in clusters ranging from one to several hundred, some hauled from a quarry eight kilometres away. Excavations have turned up human remains, burial goods and ceramics, supporting the interpretation of the jars as part of ancient funerary practice, and making this one of the most important prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia.
