The site
Phaistos is a Bronze Age site in south-central Crete, one of the largest cities of Minoan civilization. Its centrepiece is the remains of a Minoan palace and the town that grew around it, set roughly 5.6 km from the Mediterranean and 62 km south of Heraklion. Occupied across roughly 3000 to 1400 BCE, the ruins still draw well over a hundred thousand visitors a year.
