The site
Delos is a tiny Greek island near Mykonos, at the heart of the Cyclades, barely 3.43 square kilometres yet one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. Held as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, it served as a holy sanctuary for a millennium and later a cosmopolitan Mediterranean port. Excavations here, among the most extensive in the region, earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1990.
